Three Major or Commonly accepted ways of Research

Research can be defined as the search for knowledge or any systematic investigation to establish facts. There are many types of research, but here, in brief, we will refer only to a three classification approach in the following way.   

Exploratory Research: It explores; structures and identifies new problems.

Constructive Research: Develops solutions to a problem.

Empirical Research: Test the feasibility of a solution using empirical evidence.

Primary Research: Also called Field Research; a collection of data that does not already exist, it can be done through interviews and questionnaires.

Secondary Research: Also called as Desk research.

Qualitative Research: Gather deep understanding of human behavior; it deals with the why and how of the problems, and reasons.

Quantitaive Research: In the social sciences, the term relates to empirical methods, originating in both philosophical positivism and the history of statistics, which contrast qualitative research methods. In this way of research we use empirical methods, e.g. in a paper authors conclude that at an average how many tourists visit the Eiffel Tower in summer, etc.
